Sangiovese is Italy’s most planted red grape by far. This very fact, however, tends to obscure that it is also one of Italy’s – and the world’s – best varieties, capable of producing compelling, long lasting wines full of personality. Not only that: except for Pinot Noir, this noble grape is able like no other to convey a clear message of origin and originality right into the glass. It is as fickle as Pinot Noir too: this primadonna does not respond well to anything less than the best sites and low yields, whilst in the cellar it demands a hands-off, low-intervention approach to show its greatness.
In the recent past Sangiovese has not been given an exclusive lead role to show its greatness sufficiently. Moreover, blends with French varieties and new oak have obscured its identity. Over the last 10 years or so a renewed, strong focus on 100% Sangiovese has led to wines which can measure convincingly with the best in the world today.
The UK, the world’s most important fine wine market, has been paying close attention to what is happening in Italy where its best producers dedicate all their time, talent and know-how to Sangiovese. SANGIOVESE RESET will focus on this unique and unstoppable development and present this in the world’s capital of wine – London – during an exclusive trade-only whole day event dedicated to this variety scheduled in London on Tuesday 3 March 2020.
SANGIOVESE RESET will make head turns and opinions change. It will provide an all-encompassing platform to show each and every aspect of this variety to wine buyers, distributors, Masters of Wine, sommeliers, journalists and educators in the presence of producers who will be able to communicate person to person and taste their wines with these opinion leaders and influencers.
Jane Hunt, a Master of Wine with over 20 years of experience in organising large scale trade tastings and seminars with an almost exclusive focus on Italy and Walter Speller, Italian correspondent of www.JancisRobinson.com have come up with SANGIOVESE RESET one of 2020s most interesting Italian wine events on the London trade calendar. This new initiative follows two very successful editions of ‘Nebbiolo Day’; the 2019 edition boasting well over 450 unique trade visitors in the presence of 92 producers from every denomination where this grape is cultivated in Italy.
Participation at SANGIOVESE RESET will be by invitation to a select group of the best Sangiovese producers from Central Italy. Seminars led by experts on the country and the grape variety, its past as well as its future, will deliver additional in- depth information, education and lively debates. Participation is available on a ‘first come, first served’ basis for a maximum of 90 individual producers.
A focus table will feature the latest releases, while many older vintages will be available at the producers stands proving that prolonged bottle age can result in some of the world’s most fascinating red wines and in an abundance of styles delivering a strong argument that Sangiovese’s greatness is based on hard facts. Facts that are bound to resonate through the UK wine trade for years to come.
